Assalamu alaikum everybody,

First of all, I’d like to apologise for the lack of updates on the forums. Real life has understandably taken precedence, but I’ve now managed to go through each tour, update the results, and bring everything back up to date.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to publicly announce that this will be my final season in charge of the Pakistan U20s.

I want to sincerely thank the entire community for the incredible support you’ve shown throughout my time as manager. Without all of you, many of the successes we’ve enjoyed over the past few seasons simply wouldn’t have been possible. Every player trained, every suggestion made, every bit of encouragement and support has contributed to where we’ve reached today, so a huge round of applause to you all. I wish whoever takes over this fantastic team every success and hope they continue building on the strong foundations we’ve laid together.

Looking back over the past six seasons, Pakistan U20s have enjoyed a memorable period of success. We’ve qualified for three consecutive One Day World Cups and two of the last three Twenty20 World Cups. Even more pleasing has been the consistency we’ve built over the past three seasons, qualifying for three consecutive World Cups (OD, T20, OD).

In the One Day World Cups played during my tenure, we’ve reached one semi-final and suffered one group-stage exit (missing out on NRR). Our Twenty20 World Cup journey began with an early group-stage exit, but we bounced back brilliantly. Most recently, at the EOS 64 Twenty20 World Cup, we reached the final, only to fall agonisingly short against Afghanistan.

During my tenure, we also navigated the NAT structure changes while continuing to achieve success both before and after the transition. We guided Pakistan from Division 3 to Division 1 in the One Day format before the structure changed. Prior to the recent Twenty20 World Cup, we climbed to No. 5 out of 20 nations in the T20 NAT ladder rankings.

Now, for the first time in Pakistan U20 history, we sit proudly at No.1 in the One Day NAT ladder rankings. Winning 11 of our 12 OD matches this season, including an eight match unbeaten run, we overtook Bermuda and Australia on the very final day to finish top of the rankings. As a fitting reward, we will host the upcoming One Day World Cup on home soil, something I couldn’t have wished for in my final swansong as manager.

They’ve been remarkable achievements all round, but one final challenge remains.

The EOS 65 One Day World Cup is just around the corner. It will be the last time I have the privilege of leading this wonderful group of players, and my aim is simple, to lift the World Cup. If I’m being honest, I’d gladly trade every achievement from the past six seasons for that one trophy that has continued to elude us. There’s no better way to sign off than by finally bringing it home.

Before I finish, there’s one person I simply have to thank, Shahzaday11 (Khurram Bhai).

Thank you for your dedication, commitment and unwavering support throughout my six seasons in charge. You’ve been the constant rock by my side from day one. Assistants have come and gone over the seasons, but you remained loyal until the very end. Your advice, support and friendship have meant more than words can express. Thank you, Sir.

Finally, thank you once again to everyone who has supported Pakistan U20s throughout this journey. Let’s give it one last push and hopefully finish this incredible chapter by bringing the World Cup home.

1st game vs New Zealand on a slow pitch with sunny conditions.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat.

Pakistan made a sluggish start with the bat as New Zealand kept things tight and never really allowed us to score freely. S.Ashraf got us underway before falling in the 8th over, while wickets continued to fall at regular intervals leaving us in a difficult position at 110/4 shortly after drinks. From there, M.Haider and A.Razzak completely changed the innings. Haider survived chances on 2 & 63 before making New Zealand pay with a superb unbeaten 113* (140), while Razzak provided the late acceleration with 67* (65). The pair combined for an unbroken 130 (124) fifth wicket partnership to lift Pakistan to a modest total of 240/4 from our 50 overs.

New Zealand got off to a flying start despite a dropped chance off the very first ball of the chase and kept themselves ahead of the required rate throughout. Pakistan managed to chip away with wickets here and there, reducing New Zealand to 162/5, but every time we found a breakthrough they responded with another important partnership. L.Cooley anchored the chase brilliantly with 69 (89) before finally falling with just 2 runs required, leaving the visitors needing only a formality. New Zealand eventually reached 241/6 with 15 balls to spare to claim a 4 wicket victory. U.Gul was the pick of the bowlers with 2/44, while S.Yaqoob endured a difficult day, conceding 70 from his 10 overs.

2nd game vs Kenya on an even pitch with hot conditions.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat.

Pakistan couldn’t have asked for a better start with the bat as M.Haider picked up where he left off from the opening game. Haider 79 (95) and J.Tirmizi 134 (120) put Kenya under pressure from the outset, combining for a superb 164 (173) opening partnership to lay the perfect platform. Haider eventually departed just before the 30 over mark, but Tirmizi continued the charge with a brilliant century before falling for 134. Although we lost a few wickets towards the back end which stemmed the flow slightly, valuable contributions from S.Asad 48 (31), F.Ali 29 (24) ensured Pakistan finished strongly, posting an imposing 343/6 from our 50 overs.

Kenya made a positive start to the chase and kept themselves well in the contest, scoring freely and staying on top of the required run rate. A flurry of wickets either side of the 20 over mark swung the momentum firmly in Pakistan’s favour, reducing Kenya to 119/5. G.Mutahi 47 (54) and J.Rubia 74 (77) refused to give in though, putting together a fighting 104 (110) sixth wicket partnership to briefly keep Kenya’s hopes alive. Once that stand was finally broken, so too were Kenya’s chances as Pakistan wrapped up the tail to bowl them out for 264 in 47.3 overs. S.Kadir was the standout performer with an excellent 4/37, while A.Alvi provided superb support with 3/52 as Pakistan secured a convincing 79 run victory.

3rd game vs Nepal on a dry pitch with humid conditions.

Nepal won the toss and elected to bat.

Nepal made a solid start with the bat, the openers putting on 58 for the 1st wicket before Pakistan struck twice in quick succession to slow the momentum. They recovered well to reach drinks at 111/3, but the breakthrough came immediately after the interval as another wicket fell with the very first ball. Opener L.Pun continued to anchor the innings with a well made 76 (103) and had guided Nepal to 166/4 heading into the closing stages. His dismissal in the 39th over proved to be the turning point as Nepal suffered a dramatic collapse, losing their final 6 wickets for just 35 runs to be bowled out for 201 in 47.5 overs. Every Pakistan bowler got amongst the wickets, with J.Bajwa leading the way with 3/34, while A.Subhan, H.Rizwan and S.Kadir all claimed two wickets apiece.

Pakistan’s chase got off to the worst possible start as S.Ashraf was trapped lbw in the opening over. Captain R.Amjad steadied things before departing with the score on 75, leaving some work still to do. From there, A.Younis and Q.Bashir took complete control of the contest. Younis survived dropped chances on 39 and 103 before producing a superb unbeaten 112* (136), while Bashir also made the most of two missed opportunities on his way to 51* (74). The pair combined for an unbroken 127 (163) 3rd wicket partnership to calmly guide Pakistan home, reaching 202/2 in 42.4 overs to seal an emphatic 8 wicket victory.

4th game vs England on an uneven pitch with humid conditions.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat.

Pakistan made a decent start with S.Ashraf 56 (73) and M.Haider putting on 28 before Haider was dismissed in the 7th over. Ashraf continued to build partnerships with A.Younis and J.Tirmizi before eventually falling for a well made 56, leaving Pakistan 111/3 at the halfway stage. Things quickly went downhill from there as F.Ali fell for a golden duck and Tirmizi followed shortly after, leaving us 119/5. A.Razzak and Q.Azmat managed to rebuild things with a 39 run partnership before Razzak departed, with Azmat then taking responsibility and putting together 51 with S.Rafi. Azmat’s 61 (59) gave us some much needed momentum towards the back end, with U.Gul 15* (12) and S.Subhan 8* (13) adding some late runs as Pakistan finished on 239/8 from our 50 overs.

England started their chase cautiously and Pakistan did well to pick up early wickets, reducing them to 54/3 before drinks. B.Schultz 38 (64) and X.Haldane then steadied the innings with a 52 run partnership, but when Schultz departed at 106/4 the game was firmly in the balance. What followed was the partnership that ultimately decided the game. Haldane and R.Scarff took control, putting together a superb 130 (111) partnership and gradually bringing England back ahead of the required rate. Scarff eventually fell for an excellent 75 (68) with just 4 runs needed, but Haldane remained unbeaten on 77 (91) to see England over the line with 2 balls to spare. S.Subhan gave us a late glimmer of hope, taking a hatrick, but England held their nerve to reach 240/7.

England won by 3 wickets.

Going into the final group game, we knew exactly what was required. We needed to beat UAE and then hope either New Zealand or England slipped up against Kenya or Nepal respectively. A win would have kept our semi-final hopes alive, but anything less would end our chances of progressing.

5th game vs UAE on an uneven pitch with hot conditions.

UAE won the toss and elected to bat.

UAE got off to a difficult start with K.Djoser falling cheaply, but H.Abdel and R.Ameen managed to rebuild before another couple of wickets left them 96/4 around the halfway stage. Pakistan continued to chip away at the wickets but struggled to completely break UAE’s resistance. S.Al Makhtoum 61 (64) and N.Jubair 59* (58) then took control, putting together a crucial 78 (77) partnership to push UAE towards a competitive total. Jubair remained unbeaten through to the end as UAE finished on 254/8 from their 50 overs. Q.Azmat, S.Kadir and H.Rizwan all picked up two wickets apiece.

Pakistan started the chase well enough with R.Amjad 38 (50) and S.Ashraf 21 (34) putting on 57 for the opening wicket, but we struggled to build any real momentum once the partnership was broken. A couple of quick wickets left us 74/4 and put the pressure firmly back on Pakistan. M.Nazir 44 (73) and J.Tirmizi 27 (33) tried to steady things with a 56 run partnership, but UAE continued to find breakthroughs at important moments. Tirmizi was eventually dismissed with the score on 130 before S.Kadir 22 (32) offered some late resistance, but by then the required rate had climbed too far. N.Nasih was the standout bowler for UAE with an excellent 4/64, while N.Jubair backed up his unbeaten 59 with 2/21 as Pakistan were bowled out for 185 in 43.4 overs.

UAE won by 69 runs.

Unfortunately, the defeat brought our World Cup campaign to an end, regardless of the results in the other two games. A disappointing way to finish after the highs and lows of the group stage, but plenty to take away from the tournament and from the group of players we’ve developed along the way.
