U20 ODI World Cup concluded and congratulations to New Zealand U20 on winning it.
We ended up third in the group and narrowly missed out on the semis due to NRR.
First game was against England U20 in Flat/Sunny conditions and we chased down 324 with the loss of only 3 wickets, led by centuries from Farid Qassem and Saqr Al Makhtoum.
Second game was against Nepal U20 again on a Flat pitch but with Hot weather, this time the boys chased down 387 for a 5 wicket win, led by centuries from Aladdin Yousif and Mustafa Salmeen.
Such early good form meant that the scales had to balance out eventually, and so it transpired in the very next game against the eventual champions NZ U20. In Uneven/Humid conditions, we failed to chase 235 and collapsed to 152 all out, undoing the NRR gains made in the first two games.
Fourth game was against Kenya U20 in Dry/Humid conditions, and we failed to chase down 231 in a game which saw a ridiculous collapse from us, going from 219/6 to 228 all out at a point where only 7 runs were needed from 5 overs.
Last game against Pakistan U20 we need a big win to swing the NRR advantage our way and hope for a favor from Nepal U20 against England U20. In Uneven/Hot conditions, we posted 254/8 thanks to rescue acts from Saqr Al Makhtoum and Nuri Jubair, saving us from 118/5 with a 78 run partnership and scoring half-centuries. Bowlers more than did their part in the second innings, led by Nasir Nasih's 4 wickets and Jubair's 2 at the top to dent the chase and get us a 69 run win.
We now had to wait for the result of the England U20 vs Nepal U20 game, and it was looking good for us when Nepal U20 had the English down to 227/9 in defense of 314, but what followed next was an unbelievable and unbeaten partnership of 80 runs that knocked us out of contention despite England U20 falling short in the end by 6 runs.
Our collapse in the Kenya U20 game was the real disappointment, but we can hold our heads up high at a campaign that was fought well.
I would also like to announce that I will not be seeking re-election, and want to give my appreciation to the UAE community for having me and for the support throughout the two seasons. A special thanks to MrMoose for being a constant presence as assistant and for all of his valuable contributions and insights.
