Twenty20 World Cup - Game 5: Australia v USA

It was the final day of the group 1 games with England already through and Kenya in control of 2nd place in the group. USA would need to beat a high rating Australia side who had only picked up one win so far to have a chance of sneaking into the semi-finals. Even that might not be enough as it would require New Zealand to pick up their first win of the competition against Kenya. The only thing that was really going in the USA's favour was a superior NRR largely thanks to a big win over Pakistan earlier in the week.

We got off to a great start as we selected Berg as captain and he won the toss. Some were surprised that he then went and chose to bowl first in hard/humid conditions. It seemed to be working early on as Primmer received a proper jaffa from fastie Coleman. He continued his good bowling in the next over and got over the disappointment of a dropped catch by picking up his due with the very next ball.

Elsewhere New Zealand had made a great start by picking up 2 Kenyan wickets in their first over.

For the USA, a bowling change came into effect with Berg and Ortiz coming into the attack. They both carried on where Coleman had left off with Berg picking up the scalp of Tsyzu and Ortiz grabbing the wicket of Davies-Uniacke. There was even a bonus wicket as some smart fielding led to a run out for Avila and Australian captain, Astruc, had to go. Australia seemed in disarray at 45-5 and this seemed to be confirmed as Ulysses de la Cruz II effected another run out to leave the aussies 57-6 and wondering what had hit them.

However, not everything was going the USA's way as in the other important match Kenya were battling back and at 87-3 halfway through their innings which was also on a hard pitch in humid conditions. Kenya were looking to push on and make the USA's fine performance so far an irrelevance.

The only people that thought Australia weren't a beaten side was the Australia players themselves or, at least, Breust and da Vinci (plus a USA assistant manager). Breust had got himself in and was working the ball around nicely whilst da Vinci was proving a master at stroking the ball around the field. From 57-6 to 138-6, and things were looking desperate for USA chances of progress beyond the group stage. Berg struck to remove Breust for 58 and then picked up Starc with the final ball of the innings. Da Vinci remained unbeaten at the end with 46 not out and the USA were facing a target which didn't seem possible early on; 157 to win.

In the Kenya game, they had reached 168-5 with 2 overs to go. It was already a formidable total but New Zealand produced a couple of excellent overs to restrict them to 178-8. Was there was still a chance for New Zealand to pull off a victory?

Whilst everyone may have been asking that question, it soon looked like the more important question was: how had the USA managed to make as bad a start to their batting as Australia had made to their batting? Burton's first over dismissal was a carbon copy of Davies-Uniacke's. De la Cruz II followed shortly after and Cro Cop picked up his 2nd wicket when star player Harrison was out lbw. Ashley would have been looking to capitalise on a decent beginning but was out for 20. So at the halfway stage it was 52-4 and looking distinctly like the USA had blown their chance of winning the game.

Quinn and Avila had a lot to do even just to make things look a bit more respectable. They did manage to get some runs on the board but the RRR was increasing. Then disaster struck although he's more commonly know as Cro Cop; Avila out for 17 and USA 86-5 needing 11.83 an over. The pressure was on Quinn now with just the bowlers to work with and needing to score quick runs. Quinn managed to bring up his 50 from 31 balls but the RRR was only getting higher.

With 2 over to go, USA were 129-6 and 28 runs were still needed. Quinn was still in with Berg. Berg hits 4 but then is out for 16. Quinn manages to retain strike for the last over with 18 runs required. Quinn goes on the attack and hits a 6 first ball then a 4. Only a single from the next ball and Gallegos has some work to do with the bat. 5 runs from the next 2 balls means Quinn needs 2 from the last ball to win the game. The final ball: a 2! The mighty Quinn wins the game for the USA!

Over in the Kenya game, it was a valiant effort from New Zealand. They needed 17 runs from the last 2 overs and, compared to the USA, got home comfortably with 2 balls and 5 wickets to spare!

USA make it to the semi-finals! :party :dance :party

A great write up of a great win.

Now we face a strong Indian team in the semi final, with England against the West Indies in the other game.

The wicket is looking quite rough, so it's likely a few of the quick bowlers will be called into action again.

Tour Squad Announcement - Nat One Day Division 3

With the 4th of July just gone, it is hoped that the players have kept their celebrations to a minimum as they attempt to claim independence from the tyranny of division 3.

The batters are largely the same tried and mistrusted group as last season although the powerful Craig Hansen is new and John Bass will be looking to set the tone in his first tour.

Bowers hands over the gloves to Pedro Campbell and Hogan takes possession of the captaincy from Berg.

Allrounders have been hard to come by recently but Marshawn Lynch will be keen to show that he’s ready to step up. Roberts has had a taste of international cricket before and didn’t let us down but can he now cement his place in the side?

Our hosts are Australia and the pitches are spin friendly. Don’t forget your sunblock!

Well, there were a few fireworks from our batsmen, but not quite enough as SA chased down a decent total with 4 wickets in hand.

Next up are UAE, who lost to Australia in the opening game, when it looked like they had the win in the bag.

Tour Squad Announcement - Nat Twenty20 Division 2

The start of our T20 campaign finds us in division 2 with Pakistan the hosts. The team is similar to the last one day squad so they have a chance to redeem themselves after their awful previous tour. Marion Berg has made it back into the side after a short break; his experience and captaincy could be crucial. Brennan is also back and must hope his tricky medium pace skills can strike fear into the opposition. Baker Mayfield will get another chance to impress as he returns to the batting line-up to accumulate more T20 appearances.

After the last tour there are plenty of players who will be looking nervously over the shoulders knowing that they need to put in some high class performances to remain in the side. Hansen has plenty of talent but needs to start showing it and John Bass will be looking to find the boundary rope on a more regular basis.

Others such as the mighty Roger Quinn will be looking to continue with his high scoring right to the finish. Cochran will be looking to pick up more wickets after being our top wicket taker in the first tour of the season.

So, I've decided to run for a second term as the USA's NT manager.

The highlights of my first term include a run to the semi-final of the T20 World Cup, falling to India the eventual winners. In addition, we held on to T20 division 2 status, which gives us a decent chance of qualifying for the next T20 WC.

The biggest disappointment was our inability to promote out of OD Division 3. On 3 of 4 attempts, we had a chance of promotion going into the final game, but we failed to secure the required victory.

Our biggest challenge is our relatively weak and shallow player pool. This isn't going to change, but I monitor our best youth players as the advance to senior level, and try to help managers ensure they have a good training regimen for them. Hopefully in a few seasons this will pay dividends.

Hopefully you're willing to give me another chance!

Tour Info - Nat One Day Division 3 - USA Triumphs

I’m delighted to announce that the USA have beaten everyone to win the division 3 hosting rights!
Philly reprises his role as manager and starts as he means to go on by placing the winning bid. We’ve decided to visit our near neighbours Canada who are sure to provide great hospitality. Slow, dry and green pitches were chosen although we won’t actually be playing on any green pitches; it’s slow and dry all the way.

It’s a new season so there's once again a new face or two in the squad. Brian Gentry will make his debut and will be looking to make himself a permanent fixture in the USA batting line-up. The other new face is Pedro Campbell. However, that is only because of the extensive plastic surgery which he required due to a freak petting zoo incident involving a very angry guinea pig. Thankfully, he’s recovered in time for the first international tour of the season.

I’m expecting a tough tour but with a bit of luck and a lot of support from the USA fans we may just promote!

Tour Info – Squad Announcement - Nat Twenty20 Division 2

UAE have won the hosting rights and have decided on a little visit to South Africa. Dry, crumbling, and flat are the pitches in what should prove an interesting league where anything could happen.

Roger Quinn has been dropped. He’ll undoubtedly not think it’s for the best but he’s wrong as it’s for Francisco Best, who will be making his debut. Hogan has also not made it into the squad as we try the pace of Landon Jackson.

Otherwise, it’s a fairly settled side although some are under more pressure to perform than others. Gentry will need to put in some top class batting displays if he wants to make the final tour of the season. Campbell will be also have to let the ball do the talking as he was quite close to missing out after a lack of wickets in the last tour.

Hansen and De La Cruz must have sky high confidence after they both picked up a century in the last tour and will be hoping to star again.

Some remarkable performances by the whole team brought 3 victories and promotion to Division One! :clap :party

We can look forward to the end of season T20 WC (and a great chance of qualifying for the T20 WC in another 2 season's time).

Now time to plan for the 2nd OD tour, targeting another promotion

Tour of India – Nat One Day Division 3

The final tour of the season before the T20 World Cup sees us take in the sights and sounds of India. We were expecting to see lots of pitches conducive to spin so chose six spinners. This meant that there was space in the side for Andre Matthews to make his debut. Enrique Carter returns to the fold for the batsmen as Gentry’s failure to impress in the last two tours shows that we’re not afraid to jettison a player for underperforming. Let that be a lesson to the rest of the squad!

After a successful promotion campaign to division 1 in T20, the players have hopefully developed both the taste and the knack for promotion and we will finally be able to see the back of division 3.
