Another World Cup run ends in heartbreak!

What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger?

The beauty of loss sweetens the glory of victory?

Did any of those help anyone? They haven’t helped me but that’s okay.

I would like to start by thanking each and every single manager who has every youth pulled a UAE player and anyone who has trained up a UAE player. The team that we are able to select for a World Cup is heavily dictated by the playing group available - the more people who youth pull UAE, the more players available (you all know that, simple nutrition or something).

Fortunately we’re able to look brightly to the future now and there is a pretty exciting group of players coming through!

For now let’s have a look at our key performers this World Cup.

Seif Shahriar [Sons of Pitches] - 11 wickets and 2 catches

Ubayd Yaseen [Germantown Cricket Club] - 196 runs, 2 catches and a run out. His 124 against England probably the reason we topped our group.

Serena Williams [Abu Dhabi Academy] - 8 wickets, 4 catches and a runout.

Ziyad Jabbar [Crni Zmajevi Cricket Club] - 6 wickets, 2 catches and a handy 35 with the bat!

Idris Abdul [Mohun Bagan] - 167 runs and 2 catches.

Daoud Armanjani [Spinney Wanderers] - 9 wickets and a catch.

Arif Lahab [Woodville-West Torrens Eagles] - 7 wickets.

Now it’s time to look forward, we have two players in this touring squad that will be around for the T20 World Cup and 6 others that will feature in the early tours of next season.

Thank you again to all the managers who have lent us players for all the tours this season.
Just here to contribute a few cracking commentary lines and spend hours on the transfer market.

This means the Aussies and the USA get a replay of Fridays match which the Aussies won comfortably.

Throwing my full support and well wishes toward the USA management. It’s not easy to beat the Aussies in a world cup final (Penky and Heppa can testify to that - they’ve certainly tried numerous times).
Thanks for the write up. We did rest a few key players in our game vs Australia, so they would be ready for the game vs UAE. We had already qualified.
In saying that, we will no doubt be outrated again and it will be very tough for us. We have never beat Australia since I took over. Really hoping for a finals pitch that suits us and gives us half of a chance. Fingers are crossed.

Well done on the victory mate. Hopefully you can achieve what we haven't been able to - stop Australia at the last hurdle!

ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET, pull the fine China from the back of the cupboard and clean the spare toilet! We are hosting Division 1 cricket in New Zealand. (Don’t question it - 🇦🇪/ 🇳🇿 basically next door)

Tour Dates 02 Apr. 2023 - 06 Apr. 2023
Hosting Rights Won By UAE
Hosting Country New Zealand
First Preferred Pitch Uneven
Second Preferred Pitch Hard
Third Preferred Pitch Green

Now let’s meet the touring squad

Idris Abdul [Mohun Bagan] makes their final u20 appearance.
They average just over 30 in 12 appearances so they’ll be looking to finish in fine form and stamp their legacy on UAE U20 cricket lore.

Serena Williams [Abu Dhabi Academy] (don’t question it) will also make their final u20 appearance with 7 appearances so far. A 5/40 their best display and we’d love to see that replicated this week.

Yahir Ameen [Otago] makes their first and last u20 appearance debuting this week as a 20.14 year old! 👏

I may get emotional about this one *sobs audibly*, ALIM AMEEN [Woodville West-Torrens Eagles] makes their final u20 appearance this week. A stalwart over the last two seasons as a damaging NBB fast bowler. Alim will look to wreak damage this week in conditions that will suit a fitting demolition job farewell! 🎉

Jameel Khatib [green eagle] makes their first and last u20 appearance debuting this week as a 20.13 year old! 👏

Afifi Saad [Realism Ravens] also making their last appearance and will look to add to their 140 odd runs in their 5 National appearances to dates.

Zaki Hassan [PKF Tigers 2nd XI] debuting this week as a 20.11 year old!

Qadir Salah [Spinney Wanderers] will look to build on their impressive batting performances from their last 4 National appearances. Currently averaging 37, a few big innings in bowler friendly pitches this week could stamp a star!

Ibrahim Rasheed [Abu Dhabi Academy] another one! Debut from the ACADEMY.

Ubayd Yaseen [Germantown Cricket Club] will look to add to 344 National runs scored over 8 appearances! 👏

Zavier Ka’Im [Dhaka Metropolis] will look to build on their previous 6 nat appearances and I’m backing them to have a big week with the Seam Specialist shining on humid seam friendly decks.

Shaikh Mullet [Roger Mullet Tribute XI] - THE Mullet back with the gloves for another tour of flowing beautifully iconic hair!

Samir Amin [Scott’s Totts] - debut alert for the fast medium with a dangerous slower ball.

Ismail Murat [Emirates Academy] - debut alert for another FM! 👏

Fadi Abdul [Emirates Academy] - debut alert for a FAST BOWLER!

Cam Green [Legends of Cuba] - the artist formerly known as Shaquille Wahhab will look to have a field day in conditions to suit his NBB fast bowling! They’ll look to add to their 180 national runs as well!

Zaim Dhakkar [Emirates Academy] - debut alert for a FM AR!

Ghalib Sami [Xandoosra] - debut alert for yet another FM!

Tune in at 2200 daily (remember Australian daylight savings is no longer 🎉)!

Our hit list is Ireland, Bermuda, Zimbabwe, England and then last and by no means least Australia!

Let’s get this off to a flyer and then beat the Aussies on Day 5 and pick up the trophy on the way out! 🇦🇪

Okay I am ready to talk about it.

A heart breaking 2 run loss this morning. We could blame the ME. We could say we got rooted by the Randomness of the game. We could also accept that we gave it a red hot crack and came narrowly close to a fantastic win. Let's do the latter, accept that we tried our best and fell narrowly short of the victory. We move on to tomorrow and refocus.

Home UAE U20
Away Ireland U20
Ground Showboating CG
League U-20 One Day 1
Date 02 Apr 23 22:00
Crowd 20,000
Weather Sunny
Pitch Uneven

UAE U20 Ireland U20
Batting - Top Order 10,642 9,492
Batting - Middle Order 8,466 7,794
Batting - Tail 4,249 6,373
Bowling - Seam 9,195 (50) 9,125 (30)
Bowling - Spin 0 (0) 10,595 (20)
Fielding/Keeping 11,039 10,079
Overall 168,274 167,067

Result: Ireland U20 won by 2 runs
Toss: Ireland U20 won the toss and elected to bat.
Man of the match: Serena Williams (3 points), Ubayd Yaseen (2), Levi Tate (1)

A Five FA for Serena Williams including critical wickets that broke open the Irish innings when partnerships formed and prospered. 50s for Yaseen and Saad very nearly dragged us through the mud, but it wasn't to be today.

Around the Grounds
Zimbabwe beat England by 1 wicket (against the Grain - England rating 10k more)
Australia beat 'Muda (Only a 6k superior rating)

England actually outrated Australia today by just under 2k. 10k rating difference between all 6 teams (I want to say one of the smaller rating gaps we've seen on Day 1 of a Tour in a while but that's relying on my memory which is shot).

We crack on tomorrow at 2200 - 'Muda next on the menu!

Muda do us in and we’re 0-2 needing a win tomorrow and probably a win against England on Thursday to stay up.

65 from Abdul our only real shining light.

Australia and Ireland have 2 wins.
Zimbabwe and Muda a win each.
England and UAE are winless.

Woohoo!

That makes things very very interesting.

Todays results means we may well need to win both games to survive BUT also two wins could see us win the title.

It’s a funny old game.

England then Australia. Up the difficulty level and let’s crack on.

It's a funny old game.

Outrated by 5k, arguable down at 2 for 5 chasing 216, a captain's knock drags us from the abyss into exultation.

Things started very nicely with Ameen making it 1/0 second ball!
Bairstow settled things and England were 1/60 before Cam Green (UAE Legend - not to be confused with that West Australian flog who ran out Trav Head) got two in two overs to leave England 3/76 after 18 overs.
Amin got one just before Drinks, making England 4/96 at drinks.
England then cruised to 4/146 until Williams struck in the 41st over.
Sami then struck two in two balls to leave England 7/184 after 46 overs.
Sami struck again twice to leave England 9/215 at the end of their overs.

The chase did not start ideally - second over Ameen gone second ball before Saad was run out 4th ball.
Abdul and Yaseen calmed things down getting to 2/95.
An inevitable mini collapse came and left us 5/122 after 30 overs with Hassan unbeaten on 16.
The required run rate climbed past 6 an over peaking at 6.5 at the end of the 44th.
39 from 6 overs. 31 from 5 overs. 25 from 4 overs. BANG BANG 18 runs in the 47th over. 7 required from 3 overs.
Hassan scores a four and things end in the 49th over.

Date 05 Apr 23 22:00
Crowd 22,000

Result: UAE U20 won by 3 wickets
Toss: England U20 won the toss and elected to bat.
Man of the match: Zaki Hassan (3 points), Lyall Lindsay (2), Ghalib Sami (1)

UAE U20 England U20

Bowling - Spin 0 (0) 11,523 (10)
Fielding/Keeping 10,801 10,934
Overall 163,248 168,763

Around the Grounds
Australia beat Ireland by 1 run without setting orders.
Muda beat Zimbabwe by 5 wickets.

Now Ireland and Australia sit top with 3 wins, then us and Bermuda with 2 wins, then England and Zimbabwe with a win each.

So...
Tomorrow
Aus vs UAE, Zimbabwe vs Ireland, England vs Muda

A win tomorrow guarantees we stay alive - it also gives us an outside chance at winning the title (pending Ireland's results).

A loss however, means we would have to sweat on England and Zimbabwe's results - we do have a significant NRR advantage so a small loss would most likely be okay.

That being said, let's just beat Australia tomorrow and win the title.

This game is wild sometimes.

Long story short - we lost to Australia despite looking on top for a chunk of the game.
England demote after being the second best or best rated team all week (their only win against Australia).
Australia win the title despite not setting orders on Thursday.

The Ladder Finished
Australia - 4 wins [Title winner]

Bermuda - 3 wins (0.159 NRR)
Ireland - 3 wins (0.148 NRR)
UAE - 2 wins (0.14 NRR)

Zimbabwe - 2 wins (-0.371 NRR) [Relegated]
England - 1 win [Relegated]

Looking at the match ratings from Day 5 Tour is always telling. Australia rated 13k more than us today (and we very nearly snuck a win). For context Australia rated 8k more than the second best rated England. They rated 22k more than the worse rated team today, Bermuda.

As an exercise of curiosity - I had a look at the average Match Ratings across the 5 tour days.
Australia ~172.5k
England ~169.5k
Ireland ~164k
UAE ~163k
Zimbabwe ~161.5k
Bermuda ~160.5k

Whilst the gulf to the top is being bridged, there does awfully feel like there is a chasm between the top 2 and the rest of the pack.

For completion I decided to have a look at Div 2 and Div 3 as well (worth noting Div 2 have only had 4 match days completed)
West Indies ~168k
India ~167.5k
South Africa ~166.5k
Kenya ~165.5k
Sri Lanka ~164.5k
Netherlands ~161.5k

USA ~166k
Canada ~165k
Pakistan ~161k
New Zealand ~160.5k
Bangladesh ~157.5k
Scotland ~157k

And yes, I know the ratings are only part of the puzzle and I understand they don't reflect things such as appropriate Bowling Types or smart tactics. I know lots of things have to happen to correct the pure quantity attached to the big nations and I understand that there is a gulf in international quality (IRL). I still think a 15k rating difference between top and bottom doesn't reflect a balanced/competitive competition. Anyways, I will leave it there.

Stats Summary:
Abdul's 93 today against Australia has seen him finish second for the Tour in runs scored - with his 242 runs total (coming at an average of 70.10 if you don't mind).

Unsurprisingly Alim Ameen was equal leading wicket taker with his 9 wickets including a five fa against Zimbabwe.

Afifa Saad was equal second for field catches with 3.

Abdul and Ameen were second and third respectively in the Fantasy Points.

We thank the following players for their national u20 careers:
Idris Abdul [Mohun Bagan]
- 16 ODs for 610 Runs at an average of 40.67 and 7 catches
*Abdul finishes 5th on the all time UAE Nat OD Leader board
- 7 T20s for 194 runs

Serena Williams [Abu Dhabi Academy]
- 10 ODs for 23 wickets at a strike rate of 22.43 and an average of 16.04 (and 2 five wicket hauls) and 5 catches

Yahir Ameen [Otago]
- 3 ODs including a highest score of 33

ALIM AMEEN [Woodville West-Torrens Eagles]
- 13 ODs for 21 wickets and 4 catches
- 8 T20s for 11 wickets with a strike rate and average of 16.36

Jameel Khatib [green eagle]
- 1 hit wonder with his 56 runs against Zimbabwe in his only appearance

Afifi Saad [Realism Ravens]
- 9 ODs for 219 runs

Whilst a lot of quality walks out the door, it opens the door of opportunity for another group!

Be good, pull big and be kind to one another!

EVERYTHING IN MODERATION!
T20 is like taking the nicest part of your favourite movie and setting it aside whilst you watch the opening title and the end credits.

Nonetheless, another dime, another dollar, another week, another Tour. Div 2 T20 and the lads are determined to get back up into the big dance.

Another tour wrapped up!

Apologies for missing the write ups this week.

We miss out on promotion due to NRR alone.
We finish the week with 3 wins and 2 loses.

Carnage this week with Canada snagging two draws - one of which was the decisive points to see Kenya win the title over 3 teams locked on 12 points.

Our best with the bat this week were Qadir Salah (149 runs including a 60* against Kenya) and Zavier Ka'im (115 runs including a 54 against Kenya).

Cam Green lead the bowlers in a tough week with 5 wickets. Rashad, Ishaq and Essa all getting 4 each.

We thank the following players for their National U20 Careers:
Aswad Mahmood - just the one tour and didn't hit his stride sadly but managed 37 runs from 3 innings.
Zaki Hassan - 3 ODs and 3 T20s, his best a 77 in an OD match.
Qadir Salah - 7 ODs for 246 runs at an average of 41 and 4 T20s for 149 runs at an average of 49.67.
Ibrahim Rashad - 3 ODs and 3 T20s, his best 3/34 in an OD.
Ubayd Yaseen - 12 ODs for 455 runs at 37.92 and 4 T20s.
Zavier Ka'im - 10 ODs and 4 T20s, his best a 63 in an OD.
Shaikh Mullet - 10 ODs and 4 T20s, his best a 60 in an OD - 7 catches with the gloves and 3 stumpings.
