Scotland Youth One Day Tour May 2024

Post by Cottonball » Sat Jun 01, 2024 10:55 am

Summary:

What a tour! After seasons of persistent growth and development, the Scotland Youth side saw their efforts rewarded as fans celebrated their promotion to Division 2. The team entered the tour with their highest hopes for promotion since Season 54, when the current management team took over. Following tied finishes for second and first place in the last two OD tours, Scotland Youth were determined to overcome their recent net run rate woes and secure promotion outright.

This tour featured many 'rollercoaster' matches where Scotland Youth had to show resilience and determination in every game to achieve their long-awaited promotion. There were many nail-biting moments, particularly during key wins against Kenya by 1 wicket and the promotion-clinching last-ball victory against Zimbabwe in Game 5.

Scotland Youth gained promotion from Division 3 with a 1st place finish winning 4 of their 5 matches.

Player of the Tour & Best Bowler: Rory Gemmil

Rory Gemmil, a finger spinner, rose to the occasion on hard and uneven pitches, shouldering the hopes of a nation with his exceptional performances. Gemmil led the tour not just for Scotland Youth but for the entire Division, taking the most wickets (10) and earning the highest fantasy points (274).

Gemmil played a crucial role in all four of Scotland's victories on this tour, consistently taking at least 2 wickets per match, with his best figures being 3/27. Overall, Gemmil claimed his 10 wickets at an average of 17.9 with an economy rate of 4.48.

Gemmil expressed his delight at contributing to Scotland's success and is eager to carry this momentum into the upcoming T20 tour later this month.

Best Batter: Kirk Brinkley

Kirk Brinkley emerged as the top batter for Division 3 and ranked second in fantasy points, only behind teammate Gemmil. Brinkley delivered four clinical batting performances, amassing 286 runs at an average of 95.33. His standout innings of 90, 31, 77*, and 88 were played at a blistering pace, resulting in an overall strike rate of 96.62.

Brinkley led the Division in 3-2-1 points and earned the Man of the Match award in Game 4 with a scintillating 77 off 71 balls that secured victory for Scotland. He was also pivotal in Game 5, with his 88 off 87 balls being instrumental in the dramatic chase that clinched the much-anticipated promotion.

At just 20 years old, Scotland fans eagerly anticipate many more stellar performances from Brinkley on the international stage.

Special Mentions:

Geoffrey McDonald: After struggling with the bat in the first three matches, the Scotland Youth keeper found his form with a crucial 61 runs to stabilise the innings during the team's tense chase in Game 5.

Joseph Bremner: The youngest player on tour, Bremner made an impressive debut in Youth Internationals, scoring a hard-fought 62. He followed this notable performance with an important 42, signalling a bright future ahead for this rising star!
