Irish Youth League Cup – S60

Post by crackit » Tue Oct 29, 2024 3:59 pm

I plan to sponsor another Irish League Cup in season 60 but I expect to write less as this proved fairly time consuming.

(*) The invitation dates are approximate but the deadline and cup dates are fixed to end in week 12 or 13, depending on the number of entrants.

Cup rules
  • The Irish League Cups are open to teams in the Irish league.
  • This competition is for the top ranked teams, those in the top three divisions will automatically get an invitation.
  • Teams in Division 4 will get the opportunity for any remaining places on a first come, first served basis (a full 64 team competition guarantees at least 8 places).
  • Entry is free but we ask that you consider donating one or more Ireland youth pulls whilst the cup runs.
  • The seeding and draw are random.
  • Games are T20 format, the weather is local and pitch type random.
  • Youth games are played on a Wednesday and senior games on a Saturday.
Irish Youth League Cup – S60 Schedule
Assuming the season turnover happens the weekend of 9-10 November.
  • 04-Dec (*) This is the earliest invites can be sent. I will send to teams Divisions 1 and 2 first. Then Division 3 teams. Please accept promptly to confirm your place and ensure the strongest competition possible.
  • 18-Dec (*) Final invites to the remaining Division 4 teams.
  • 01-Jan Acceptance deadline
  • 08-Jan Round One
  • 05-Feb Final, if 32 entrants as this year; or
  • 12-Feb Final, if 64 entrants as hoped

If you have a team in the Irish League, you have probably received an invite to the Irish Senior and / or Junior League Cup for this season. The good news is that we already have enough entrants for both competitions to go ahead with 32 teams as last year.

The challenge is to get enough for a round of 64 from our 84 teams. So far, all teams in the top three tiers of the One Day pyramids have been invited along with the highest eight ranked fourth tier teams.

So, if you have received an invitation, please accept to make the competition as strong and representative as possible. I hope you will join those who are already in; the little feedback I received from last season was positive. I will open the competition to all league teams a week or two before the acceptance deadline so everyone should have a chance.

Good luck

To all those of you who have accepted
The competition has now been opened to all Irish League teams and the invitations sent.

Our challenge is to get 64 entrants to ensure an extra round. If we do not achieve this some of you may be disappointed. I have no control over which entrants are included in the draw (it may be the first 32, but it may equally be that they are selected randomly).

I cannot promote the competition to invitees other than to update the forum, so please promote it should you feel willing and able; the only way I can think of is a blog entry that will be visible those in your leagues. However, feel free to pull on any lever available to you.

To all those of you who haven't
Entries close January 1 2025

Round of 32 preview
Note: team ranking used were as of the end of last season.

Four teams from the top division have entered and they have (nicely for them) been drawn in separate quarters:
  • Last year’s winners, The WaddiWallas (#5) have been drawn against Royal Eleven (#7) who reached the semi-finals last year; Royal Eleven won by 4 wickets.
  • Competition favourites and highest ranked entrant, Vegas Venoms (#2), also have a tough draw against last year’s beaten finalists Spinney Wanderers (#4); Spinney Wanderers won by 4 wickets.
  • The other semi-finalist from last year, kato xi (#10) also face worthy opponents in Meeting Mr Miandad (#10); Meeting Mr Miandad won by 9 wickets.
  • Cork City Cobra's (#3) have a seemingly easy draw against the cup’s lowest ranked team Uthaug (#60); Cork City Cobra's won by 8 wickets.
The first round has thrown up five matches between teams from the same division:
  • Youth 2.1: Blwe Scavengerz (#23) vs. Dunbrody CC (#11); Blwe Scavengerz won by 56 runs .
  • Corleone (#8) vs. Rebel Spinners (#17); Corleone won by 7 wickets.
  • Youth 2.2: Ballingeary Lakers (#6) vs. The New Originals (#12); Ballingeary Lakers won by 4 wickets and
  • Weston Super Mud CC (#32) vs. The Hurlutown Partnership (#27); Weston Super Mud CC won by 57 runs .
  • Youth 3.2: Dublin Devils (#46) vs. Staindrop Lordies (#41); Staindrop Lordies won by 6 wickets . is also one of four tier three clashes.
The others being:
  • The Irish Super Giants (#34) vs. The Cross Lances (#42); The Cross Lances won by 8 wickets .
  • Shaktar Senseless (#37) vs. Western Suburbs Hacks (#39); Shaktar Senseless won by 10 wickets .
  • Galway Gladiators CC (#31) vs. FPCC Ireland (#26); FPCC Ireland won by 12 runs .
  • Note the teams in the last two games, where the winners face each other, will all have reasonable hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.
This leaves the remaining tier 2 v tier 3 match-ups:
  • Save the Rhino (#30) vs. our own Applewood Crossing (#20); Save the Rhino won by 6 wickets .
  • Billericay Bluebirds (#9) vs. Insane Inglewood Posse (#33); Billericay Bluebirds won by 6 wickets .
  • Celtic Wolves (#24) vs. Barnsley St. Peter's (#44); Celtic Wolves won by 5 wickets .
  • Chester Ducks (#29) vs. Crzy Tornadoes (#45); Crzy Tornadoes won by 40 runs .
So what do you make of your draw?

Who do you think the eventual winner will be?

And from where might the first upset come?
Take your pick from two Division 2 sides who overcame Division 1 opponents:
  • kato xi v Meeting Mr Miandad
  • Meeting Mr Miandad won by 9 wickets
  • Vegas Venoms v Spinney Wanderers
  • Spinney Wanderers won by 4 wickets

Quarter-final draw:
  • Corleone (#8) vs. Meeting Mr Miandad (#18); Meeting Mr Miandad won by 24 runs
  • Spinney Wanderers (#4)' vs. Crzy Tornadoes (#45); Spinney Wanderers won by 5 wickets
  • Shaktar Senseless (#37) vs. Cork City Cobra's (#3); Shaktar Senseless won by 52 runs
  • Royal Eleven (#7) v Celtic Wolves (#24); Celtic Wolves won by 20 runs
Michael Corleone's team beaten by Jo's boys
Meeting Mr Miandad total of 184 always seemed to beyond Corleone. No batter fully got to grips with Miandad's spin bowling in conditions that looked ideal for the seamers. Between them the spinners took five wickets (Brandon Carson 2-29, Fergal Hunt 2-39, Emmet MacNamara 1-38).

Earlier opener Jo March didn't hang around notching up 88 not out. “Lounging and larking doesn’t pay,” observed Jo. “Don’t mind me. I’m as happy as a cricket here.”

Asked to comment on the loss, Michael Corleone seemed pragmatic: "It's not personal, sonny. it's strictly business."

Tornadoes gone for a Burton
Robert Burton took full advantage of another seamer's wicket taking 3-16 and helping the Wanderers keep the Tornadoes to 114-5. Last year's beaten finalists, Spinney, made easy work of reaching 115-5 in the18th over thanks mostly to Monty Frick's 54.

Royal progress ruled out by the Celtics
The Eleven's run chase was in touch until Francis Barr (4-0-19-3) and Senan Scannell (2-0-11-1) took a hold of the innings then squeezed the Royals out. Previously, Mitch Luckhurst had been proceeding nicely, scoring 59 off 45 balls.

Until then the Wolves 170-5 had looked it might be surpassed. Senan Scannell had already contributed 51 with the bat, ably assisted by Killian Kielty (33) and Marcas Gamble (39).

Senseless victory
In a game where batters dominated, third tier Shaktar made light work of the last remaining Division 1 team in the cup ratcheting up 227-3 (Ross Fairbairn 101*, Hector Copeland 54, and W. Mackay-Steven 45*). A surprisingly weakened Cobra's laboured to 175-4 off their twenty overs (Nigel Cobb 81, Finn Beirne 67). Shaktar are the only side outside of Division 2 in the last four.

Leaders
  • Silver pads: Jo March (Meeting Mr Miandad) 166 runs
  • Silver cap: Taral Soni (Corleone) 8 wickets for 64 runs
  • Silver gloves: Diarmuid McGrath (Meeting Mr Miandad) 7 catches and 2 stumpings
Semi-final draw
  • Meeting Mr Miandad (#18) vs. Spinney Wanderers (#4);
  • Shaktar Senseless (#37) vs. Celtic Wolves (#24);

Semi-finals - game summaries

It's not how you start, it's how you finish
Six overs in Meeting Mr Miandad were scoring at over ten an over despite the loss of two early wickets; Christian Tynan scoring 38 runs off 20 balls, Jo March 24 of 12. At the same stage in their response, Spinney Wanderers were also two wickets down but had scored 21 runs fewer. However, that doesn't tell the whole story as they were already ahead of the required run rate.

This was because during overs 7-14 Spinney contained Mr Miandad's boys to 31 runs before they rallied to 148 for 7 at the close. After March was caught by Ridley off Naidu's bowling, Tynan (80) never had a partner stay around long enough to build the innings on the solid foundation laid early on. Ankeet Naidu did most damage taking 3-23 in reducing the run rate to 7.40.

After the loss of two cheap wickets, Dane Rouse (68); Jonty Traves (22); and keeper Babiya Seeman saw the Wanderers comfortably through to their second successive Irish Youth League Cup final. Spinney will hope to go one better this year.

Spinney Wanderers (#4) v Meeting Mr Miandad (#18)
Spinney Wanderers won by 6 wickets
MMM: 148-7 (C. Tynan 80, A. Naidu 3-23)
SW: 149-4 (D. Rouse 68, E. MacNamara 2-31)

Wolves at the final door
The two innings in the other followed a similar path until they diverged after 11 overs when there was only one run between their respective scores. For Shaktar the loss of three wickets for just five runs in the next two overs severely dented their progress. For the Wolves, Senan Scannell (57 not out) and Marcas Gamble (51 not out), who came together in the ninth over saw they home safely. The door closed for the Wolves in the first round last season but a year on they are now knocking at the final door hoping to be winners.

Shaktar Senseless (#37) v Celtic Wolves (#24)
Celtic Wolves won by 8 wickets
SS: 130-7 (H. Copeland 41, S. Scannell 2-2, E. Maxwell 2-13, F. Barr 2-29)
CW: 131-2 (S. Scannell 57*, M. Gamble 51*)

Leaders
Golden pads: Christian Tynan (Meeting Mr Miandad) 222 runs
Golden cap: Taral Soni (Corleone) 8 wickets for 64 runs
Golden gloves: Diarmuid McGrath (Meeting Mr Miandad) 9 catches and 2 stumpings.

Celtic Wolves (#24) road to the final
Second tier Save the Rhino have been the only opposition not to come from the third; Royal Eleven and Shaktar Senseless both beat First Division opponents. In previous rounds we have witnessed that they have a number of batters who can score runs and a number of bowlers who can take wickets; and Senan Scannell is currently hot!
  • Round of 32: vs. Barnsley St. Peter's (#44); won by 5 wickets (M. Gamble 51*, F. Barr 1-20, E. Magesh 1-31)
  • Round of 16: vs. Save the Rhino (#30); won by 5 wickets (D. Carter 41, E. Maxwell 3-15, K. Kielty 3-23)
  • Quarter-final: vs. Royal Eleven (#7); won by 20 runs (S. Scannell 51, F. Barr 3-19)
  • Semi-final: vs. Shaktar Senseless (#37); won by 8 wickets (S. Scannell 57*, M. Gamble 51*, S. Scannell 2-2, E. Maxwell 2-13, F. Barr 2-29)

Spinney Wanderers' (#4) road to the final
Spinney beat the highest ranked team, and favourites top-tier Vegas Venoms in the opening round but things have got a little easier from there on playing two from the 2nd and one from the 3rd division. Performances for both teams have been spread around and both like to bowl first but Spinney will probably start as favourites
  • Round of 32: vs. Vegas Venoms (#2); won by 4 wickets (B. Seeman 66* , S. Shahab 2-17)
  • Round of 16: vs. Blwe Scavengerz (#23); won by 10 wickets (S. Gomes 62*, M. Frick 56*, D. Rouse 2-16, D. Depay 2-24)
  • Quarter-final: vs. Crzy Tornadoes (#45); won by 5 wickets (M. Frick 54, R. Burton 3-16)
  • Semi-final: vs. Meeting Mr Miandad (#18); won by 6 wickets (D. Rouse 68, A. Naidu 3-23)
Watch the final here:

Irish Youth League Cup Final
Congratulations to Pondicherry and the Spinney Wanderers who bowled out DoublePlayer's Celtic Wolves to win this Youth Cup Final. Both earn themselves a Pavilion membership award for making the final.

Celtic Wolves v Spinney Wanderers
Spinney Wanderers won by 22 runs
SS: 131-5 (D. Rouse 52, E. Magesh 2-17, K. Kielty 2-17)
CW: 109-10 (S. Scannell 26, S. Shahab 3-19, K. Blair 2-22, D. Rouse 2-32)
MVP: Dane Rouse

Double pivot
Both innings appeared to have turned on a single moment.

The Spinney Wanderers were 31 for 3 after 7 overs, having just lost Traves cheaply who joined Gomes and Frick in the Pavilion. This brought keeper Babiya Seeman (20 runs off 14 balls) to the crease to join Dane Rouse (a steady but game winning 52 off 52); their partnership added 40 in 5 overs. Both Christopher Stirling (21* off 18) and Kenneth Ridley (19* off 17) kept the runs ticking over for a total of 131.

The Celtic Wolves reply was going well at 25 for 1 after four overs. Then in the fifth over Samad Fergus was caught after contributing 18 off 15 balls. The innings then stalled momentarily as Marcus Gamble (25) found little support in the run chase (except from player of the tournament Senan Scannell (26)) that never got close after that.

Leaders
  • Golden pads: Christian Tynan (Meeting Mr Miandad) 222 runs
  • Golden cap: Taral Soni (Corleone) 8 wickets for 64 runs;
  • An honourable mention goes to Moses Odumba (Royal Eleven) who also took 8 wickets but for 85 runs.
  • Golden gloves: Diarmuid McGrath (Meeting Mr Miandad) 9 catches and 2 stumpings.
  • Another honourable mention goes to finalist Babiya Seeman (Spinney Wanderers) with 9 catches and 1 stumping, having added 3 catches in the final.
Player of the tournament
  • Senan Scannell (Celtic Wolves)
I should start sending invitations for the Irish Youth League Cup – S61 about 15 March, please keep an eye out and spread the word.
