Hi everyone,

A new chapter has begun for the England U20 as I look set to take the lead this weekend.

Whilst none of you had to vote for me (so no need to thank you...!) I'm really excited to have the opportunity and look forward to getting started.

First order of business is to get a team of enthusiastic assistants together. I'm pleased to report that Wolfberries is happy to continue as assistant and will bring a wealth of experience and very recent knowledge of the U20 group to the team.

I'm eager to hear from any other managers interested in getting involved. Please get in touch.

We have three weeks of friendlies until the first Tour Selection deadline. Plan is as follows:

Week 2 - Seamers
Wednesday - uneven / cloudy vs. Australia
Saturday - green / sunny vs. Bangladesh

Week 3 - Spinners
Games TBC but dry plus crumbling/slow with some hot

Week 4 - matches to be played on touring pitches
Games TBC

Many thanks,
Montyh

Every week I'll be taking a look at the best English prospect to be recruited in FTP. It won't necessarily be the player with the highest rating, but one which if developed in a good academy with a bit of sublevel luck, could be an important player for the England U20's in the future.

For Week 0 of Season 50 it is:

Garth Singh - https://www.fromthepavilion.org/player. ... Id=2434644
Recruited by Scottish side A Shift Old Boys and sold to Wolfpack for $125k, this LFM NBB combines a great bowler type and talent with a $950 wage and ord/reas bowl/tech start. Garth has decent secondaries and should be well looked after with Wolfpack's ranked top 100 worldwide youth side.

For Week 1 it is:

Omar Curtin - https://www.fromthepavilion.org/player. ... Id=2436958
In all honesty, a less blessed week for England with only 2 $900+ wage players recruited. Curtin was one of them and has a reasonable/ord bat/tech start with Skilled (Technique), one of the better talents. Starts with low experience and power - let's see whether Hay Spitfires can put him in contention for a future England call-up!

I'll look at Week 2 (current week) next week once the full weeks' recruitment has finished.

Remember to continue recruiting England and if you'd like any advice about your players, please reach out.

Thanks,
Montyh

Well our first friendly match against Australia was an uphill struggle from the start...

The Aussies fielded a team with a combined wage of $87k (vs. ours at $57k). Pleasingly we managed to take their top-order wickets with some regularity, only 1 of their top 5 batsmen passed a score of 20. However partnerships of 94 & 49 towards the death gave Australia a daunting total of 255 for England to chase.

Pick of the bowlers for us was LFM Marks (40-2 from his 10 overs) who looks certain to tour in a few weeks' time.

Fair to say our chase started badly at 17-2, with RF Alford and his $7.6k wage taking the wickets of our top 4 batsmen. Honourable mentions to AR Noack (19 runs, surviving 47 balls), Catalano (58 off 87), Warren (37 off 52) and keeper Goldsmith (41* from 33) who made the result look a little more honourable towards the death. In the end, we were outplayed across all departments, but no shame seeing as Australia will always field an excellent 11.

Saturday - green / sunny vs. Bangladesh - will be trying out another set of seamers as we continue to prep for tour selection.

Week 3 - Spinners
Wednesday - dry / hot vs. Kenya
Saturday - crumbling / windy vs. West Indies

Cheers,
Montyh

A pleasing 25-run victory vs. Bangladesh

I was relatively happy with our total of 237 in green / sunny conditions. Our 2nd strongest keeper Goldsmith had another pleasing performance to follow his 41* vs. Australia with 51 runs from 46 balls. Important really as the depth outside of him and Wolfie's Clingeleffer is looking shallow at the moment...Warren also contributed with 64 which was very handy.

We had Bangladesh 49-4 before a partnership of nearly 100 runs threatened to ruin our chances of victory. Thankfully, we then took regular wickets with Diablo and Quigley taking 3 wickets apiece.

We're diving into our spin options this week with games against Kenya & West Indies. Will provide some commentary once each game completes.

In other news, I can share our Week 2 Season 50 player to watch. Following on from Singh and Curtin, it is:

Sydney Need - https://www.fromthepavilion.org/player. ... Id=2439649
This LFS starts with ave/ave bat/bowl and reasonable fielding, supported by decent secondaries. He has a useful talent, Spin Specialist and is $1k+ in wages. Should develop into a tidy player!

Honourable mention to Laurie Newman who has a $1.2k wage and a reasonable/average bat/tech start. He's got gifted bowling to aid his ord start as a RFM, could be an AR option depending on how his manager wanted to progress.

Thanks,
Montyh

Yep - one of 6 $900+ wage recruits so far this week. One each from us two, one from Eggy too.

At the moment the best looks to be Gordon Willis - poor tech but reasonable bat / power / fielding with gifted batting. A bit worried because the manager currently has him on bowling training. Hoping that changes before Monday's training. Even with below par technique could still be an interesting option in the future.

Let's see whether any more come through this week

A convincing 185-run victory over Kenya earlier today.

Wasn't much between the sides from a ratings perspective, however it looks like Kenya experimented with 3 seamers on hot / dry which really allowed our batsmen to put on a big total of 318. We played our first choice batting line-up and Tafail got 115 from 111 balls in an excellent knock. Runs followed from all-rounder Levy and Roberts at the tail which was pleasing to see.

Unsurprisingly the bowlers exploited the rate pressure excellently. The seamers struggled early on but took 3 wickets, and the spinners were all very economical with Horrocks taking 15-4. Horrocks has a bit of a question mark next to him because of his ordinary experience, but can't argue with that performance.

We got a little bit of fortune with some successful / well managed triggers and they were terrible in the field, but pleased we were able to capitalise on the chance we were given.

West Indies on Saturday in a windy / crumbling. Quin, Locastro & Levy will play as spinners - opportunities to claim Touring spots still up for grabs!

A comfortable 6-wicket win vs. the West Indies on Saturday, aided by the WI's Management's failure to set a team. Disappointingly, not the best use of a friendly slot..

The Indies played a debutant at keeper (no prior keeper catches) also as captain (reasonable captaincy). From what I can work out, maybe only 1/2 of their bowlers were actual bowlers. But on the flip side, their MR for batting was very strong, c.4k above our batting rating.

Helpfully we bowled first so we did learn about our bowlers somewhat, with Locastro taking 36-4. The only thing that was going to derail our chase were runouts (Rigg 74 (71)) but we eased home with 15 overs to spare.

Pitches for the upcoming tour are green, slow and uneven - we'll be taking a seam orientated attack and are currently working through the options.

Ordinarily I'd try and avoid bias when choosing our Week 3 stud, but can't overlook my recruit from last week:

Egham Town CC >> Graeme Bullough >> Details
Player Info
16y1w | 27,227 rating | $1,241 wage (5% discount)

Right hand batsman | Left arm Fast medium

Talents Accumulator, Prodigy
Nationality England
Experience poor
Captaincy ordinary

Skills
Batting reasonable Endurance ordinary
Bowling average Technique poor
Keeping poor Power poor
Fielding reasonable

So far this week's crop looks relatively interesting - with two $1k+ wage Prodigys - will report back once everyone has recruited for week 4
